Ben Bowman is a BHIS Security Consultant who joined in 2023, bringing research experience from Madison Cyber Labs and a longtime passion for the company, and who enjoys learning from his team while spending his free time fishing, swimming, and spelunking.

Brian Fehrman is a long-time BHIS Security Researcher and Consultant with extensive academic credentials and industry certifications who specializes in AI, hardware hacking, and red teaming, and outside of work is an avid Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner, big-game hunter, and home-improvement enthusiast.

Bronwen Aker is a BHIS Technical Editor who joined full-time in 2022 after years of contract work, bringing decades of web development and technical training experience to her roles in editing pentest reports, enhancing QA/QC processes, and improving public websites, and who enjoys sci-fi/fantasy, Animal Crossing, and dogs outside of work.

Derek is a BHIS Security Consultant, Penetration Tester, and Red Teamer with advanced degrees, industry certifications, and broad experience across forensics, incident response, monitoring, and offensive security, who enjoys learning from colleagues, helping clients improve their security, and spending his free time with family, fitness, and playing bass guitar.

Jack Verrier joined Black Hills Information Security (BHIS) in the Summer of 2024 as a Security Consultant. In this role, he performs external, internal, and wireless engagements, as well as creating content like writing blogs, giving talks, and teaching at conferences. Previously, Jack worked several jobs, including penetration testing and physical security, as well as working as an electronics technician, teaching computer repair, and even being a hand model. He chose BHIS because he was a previous client and was impressed by the work they did. He enjoys the community-benefit focus and the opportunity to work with smart and skilled people. Outside of work, Jack can be found creating ceramics and pottery.

Joff Thyer is a BHIS Security Consultant with advanced degrees, multiple GIAC certifications, and deep expertise in offensive security and exploit development, who enjoys crafting sophisticated malware for penetration tests and, outside of work, making music and woodworking.

Alex Minster is a cybersecurity professional with a passion for Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) , and a desire to use his technical skills to make a meaningful impact on society. With nearly twenty years of experience in cybersecurity, and a current role in Threat Intelligence for a global financial corporation, Alex remains very active in numerous cybersecurity groups including DC608 and Black Hills Information Security. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Alex is an avid oldschool gamer who enjoys arcades, retro gaming, and tabletop games. He brings his passion for adventure and his commitment to helping others to everything he does, both in and out of his professional career.

Beau Bullock is a Senior Security Consultant and has been with Black Hills Information Security (BHIS) since 2014. Beau has a multitude of security certifications and maintains his extensive skills by routinely taking training, learning as much as he can from his peers, and researching topics that he lacks knowledge in. His favorite part of being at BHIS is having the opportunity to learn more, and the other amazingly talented people who work around him. He is a constant contributor to the infosec community by authoring open-source tools, writing blogs, speaking at conferences and on webcasts, and teaching his online class, Breaching the Cloud. Outside of his time at BHIS, Beau enjoys staying fit, gaming with his kids, playing guitar, and releasing music under the name NOBANDWIDTH.

My name is daniel miessler and I'm a Cybersecurity / AI engineer and founder based out of the San Francisco Bay Area who's been writing online since 1999. My goal is to help build a positive, human-based AI future, which I call human 3.0. To do that, I am building AI products and services that upgrade and magnify people and organizations—rather than try to replace them.

Ethan Robish has worked with Black Hills Information Security (BHIS) since 2008 — first as an intern and then as a full-time Security Consultant starting in 2012. In his current role as a Threat Hunter, Ethan is involved with customer engagement, research, working with Active Countermeasures’ AC-Hunter, as well as improving BHIS HTOC and SOC offerings. Previously, he implemented defensive security solutions for the Exchange Online security team as a Microsoft intern. While in college, he competed in the International Collegiate Programming Competition (ICPC) World Finals. In his time off, he enjoys cooking, playing the piano, and reading fantasy novels.

Hayden Covington joined Black Hills Information Security (BHIS) in the Summer of 2022 as a SOC Analyst. He chose BHIS after hearing many great things over the years and seeing the quality of work, as well as finding people who have the same passion for the field as he does. His favorite part of the job so far has been the community. Previously, Hayden worked in a SOC for a Naval contractor, where he also served as their SOAR project manager and SME, as well as insider threat lead. When he’s not working, Hayden can be found doing anything athletic (like triathlons!), as well as enjoying video gaming and Formula 1.
